Transactions between Big?5 personality traits and job characteristics across 20 years

Although understanding the relationship between individual and work environment is a core concern of organizational research, few studies have examined longitudinal transactions Big-5 personality traits job characteristics. Building on research in design we develop hypotheses detailing (i.e., openness, conscientiousness, extraversion, agreeableness, neuroticism) two key characteristics discretion workload). Specifically, hypothesize test with regard to effects personality, characteristics, reciprocal these constructs. Our findings, based latent change score analysis data collected over three waves across 20 years, show strongest support for particularly workload agreeableness. We found no limited (except positive effect neuroticism discretion), evidence effects. Practitioner points Job demands can alter employee personality. Employees who consistently experienced high workloads 20-year period incurred developmental increases – agreeableness such that they became more outgoing assertive, curious, broadminded, as well helpful sympathetic. did not incur similar development changes
